Mentors make a difference to teens’ lives

In the latest issue of The Prairie News, Seth Seely wrote an article concerning the “modern gentleman.” One point he made was the significance of having a mentor. Someone you look up to, turn to advice for, learn life lessons from. I definitely agree with him, considering I have a few of my own.

One of my mentors is my father. He is a very talented man and a very loving dad. My life is easier knowing that I can turn to him for support, his opinion, and his words of wisdom. My dad has taught me what it means to be a family. He has shown me how important it is to always do your best work. Repeatedly, he has reminded me to do what makes me happy, yet be aware of how others feel. I have been prepared for the real world because of his presence in my life. His dedication to my family and his hard work inspire me.

Another major mentor in my life, specifically the last two years of it, has been my journalism adviser, Mrs. Leslie Orman. She has shown me how to be a professional. Through her guidance on the school newspaper I have begun to understand how the world of business works. She has taught me how to find a story in a hay stack. Mrs. Orman has made so many opportunities available to myself and her other students. I look to her when I need advice on anything business related or any writing style question. I also know that I can always go to her if I need someone to talk to. She is very talented and excellent at making her point.

I hope that I can become half as brave as she is. She says what needs to be said without fear or restriction. By being around her I have learned how crucial it is, in every area in life, to simply say what you think. She has raised her students to believe in the power of words, the importance of correct information, and the meaning of reputation. Not to mention, the wonderful rights we have as citizens of a country that allows our free speech. I aspire to be as devoted to my career as she has proved herself to be.

No matter what I end up doing, both of these remarkable people will be to thank. I hope that everyone can find a mentor that can show them as much as I have been shown. Keep your eyes open. What people in your life help you become a better person just by being around? Discover these people, and every once in awhile remember to thank them for their patience and support.
