It has been two years since Lady Chiefs basketball coach Stephanie Phillips informed her students of her traumatic disease. Phillips was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and has been courageously battling the disease. On January 27th, after receiving news that her cancer had spread, Phillips announced to her team that she was stepping down in order to spend time with her family and combat the sickness.
There will be a Faculty vs. Lady Chiefs Alumni game in the Kickapoo gymnasium on Tuesday, Feb. 9th. A few staff members will also participate as victims in a pie throwing contest.
“I’m hoping that some of my colleagues get hit in the face,” ISS supervisor Brian Hall said. Hall also hopes that people remember that it is important to help whenever they get a chance. “It’s something I think is going to bring the school together,” Hall said of the upcoming game. All proceeds from the evening will go to Coach Phillips, and donations will also be taken during lunch until that date.
Not only is the Kickapoo community supporting their beloved coach, but others in Springfield are also joining in the cause. Throughout the month of February, Texas Roadhouse, located at 255 East Monastery, will be donating money earned on Saturdays to Coach Phillips, if guests mention the Kickapoo Lady Chiefs.
