Republican Victory in Massachusetts Breaks Hope of Democratic Legislation

On Tuesday, the election to replace the late Ted Kennedy’s senate seat was held. The Republican candidate Scott Brown was the victor, which proves more than just a win for the Republican party in the state of Massachusetts (a state that kept Ted Kennedy in office for 46 years). Scott Browns election marked the first time Massachusetts voters elected a Republican since 1972. The victory in Massachusetts for Brown breaks the filibuster in the senate on the major legislation that is the Healthcare Reform.
While it proved to be a major victory for opposition of the reform, it is a major loss for President Obama and his supporters who are now forced to rethink the legislation. The President spoke in an ABC television interview, “The same thing that swept Scott Brown into office swept me into office swept me into office. People are angry and they are frustrated. Not just because of what has happened the last year or two years, but what’s happened over the last 8 years,” President Obama said. Although he has suffered a minor defeat, the President continues to press on, “It doesn’t mean I back off the agenda of healthcare or energy or financial regulatory reform or dealing with our deficits but it doesn’t all have to be all on top of each other, piled on,” said President Obama.
