By default, most people will look at life through their own eyes. It’s the natural instinct. You think your own thoughts and you act on them. It takes extra effort to step outside yourself and look down at this softly spinning planet of ours with objectivity. As an avid writer, this ability is crucial to me. My ability to simply observe, without emotion getting in the way, is second to breathing. I need to be able to watch the behavior and attitudes and feelings of people without applying my prejudices to them.

Because of this talent, and also possibly because of my Christian beliefs of love, I can honestly say that I hate no one. Oh, make no mistake, there are some people that annoy the living crap out of me and I’d rather they go through life with duct tape over their mouths, but I do not hate them. I see them as simply characters, with their own emotions and prejudices and loves. I see them as fascinating and lovely in their own annoying way. This world is a fantastic machine, running perfectly with all of us as indispensable components. Our differences are more than beautiful, they are essential.

That being said, I love reading the comments on this site and seeing the debates that crop up. Our opinions are what make life interesting. However, there is something that annoys. People can state their opinion all they want, but you must know that you will never make someone share your exact opinion through debate. Why? Because they have their own perspective on life. And yet, some debaters will try until their heads explode. I’d like to suggest a step back. Drop your own opinion. Just get rid of it temporarily. No, I don’t want to live the cliche of “Put yourself in their shoes,” but just calm down, forget that you’re an impassioned human being, and look at the big picture. If we can finally say “I understand your position” and actually mean it, there just might be hope for us after all.

On Wednesday March 3, 2010 Mr. Sotheran’s English I class took what they have learned about Greek culture and mythology to teach Mrs. Constantine’s special education class about a specific god or goddess. “ It’s better than reading stuff,” freshman Kaylor Michael said while drawing Hephaestus, the god of fire and crafts.

This was a hands-on, interactive activity beginning with learning how to put on a toga and eating grapes while socializing. “[This project] is interactive and you get to experience what it is like to be a god or goddess” freshman Lauren Hinnershitz said. Many of the students in Mrs. Constantine’s class said they enjoyed dressing up like ancient Greeks. The classes formed groups of three or four with a given god or goddess to draw and color on butcher paper. Freshman Dominique Schullo, Lauren Skaggs, and junior Kendra Adams worked together to complete the drawing of Hestia, the goddess of hearth. “I learned that she [Hestia] got swallowed by her dad” Adams said. The two classes finished the activity with a presentation over their specific god or goddess. Hence, learning can be fun, and for Mrs. Constantine’s and Mr. Sotheran’s classes this experience was.

Lincoln, Nebraska – All eyes are on the home of the cornhuskers tonight as the Lincoln Public School system’s board of education meets to discuss their next superintendent. Incumbent superintendent Gourley’s replacement could be Springfield Public School’s Norm Ridder. Springfield has been playing special attention to the Nebraska district since Ridder was named one of seven finalists for the position. After interviewing in person and holding a public forum for the community last week Ridder could find out as early as tonight if he has been chosen for the job. The Lincoln Nebraska Journal reported a controversy earlier this week after Ridder failed to disclose a lawsuit that took place under his direction while he was superintendent in a Colorado school district. According to an interview with the paper Ridder says the issue had more to do with the board of education. The lawsuit was brought by the ACLU involving the formation of a gay and lesbian club. The district has met to either narrow the field or name the new superintendent. For being over two hours long, most parts of the movie had me writhing in anticipation. All I wanted to know was what the hell was going on! After shocking twists and turns, the end of the movie finally came to a close. As a regular movie-goer, I definitely wasn’t expecting what happened next. I didn’t love it, yet I didn’t dislike it either. In fact, though the ending was depressing, I could see it a million times more. Without giving anything away I’ll leave this review by saying… how could the human mind be so fragile?

On a less related note, the jokes about Johnny Weir, the Olympic figure skater, are just about as called for as John Mayer’s N-word slip-up. Both Australian and French-speaking Canadian Olympic commentators have made controversial remarks about Weir, his sexuality, his costumes, and his being effeminate. I have no idea how many people in their homes have poked fun at Weir, but I am going to assume the worst. First of all, why bother? Don’t you think he has heard everything you could possibly say about him at least twice? Back to being professional, these commentators are speculating on the Olympics, which is such a special, prestigious place to be. Again, wrong setting. I know that it is okay for these people to say what they think and be a tiny bit biased, but what I didn’t know was that it was acceptable to be a jerk to competitors. I highly doubt being homophobic is part of their job description, but I could be mistaken.

We all mess up. I probably have more than my fair share of mistakes, slip-ups, and trip-ups. That being said, we all have the right to think and feel whatever we want. Also, the First Amendment grants us the Constitutional right to say whatever it is that we think. However, perhaps it is best to follow the “Golden Rule” instead. If you would prefer people to be kind to you, you should be kind to everyone else. If you don’t mind people being mean, then by all means, go nuts. Still, it is imperative that everyone tries their best everyday to avoid hurting the feelings of others. I cannot stress enough that this is especially true in professional settings such as an interview or while broadcasting an event that millions of people watch. As much as we would like to think that America is politically correct, this country and actually everyone else, can do better.
