Kayla Chambers, 17, and Jordan Luke, 17, were both indifferent when asked about the towering cardboard structure found just outside room 110. The pair had started the project a few days before Thanksgiving break as a final grade for Ceramics I, but it had escalated into something more. “The house was built in order for me to get an A on my final, but I realized that towards the end I was just doing it for fun,” Chambers said. She has taken several art classes during her high school years and shows an interest in art as a career. As Chambers showed me her elaborate portfolio, she mentioned her plans to attend Drury University for architecture.
Not long after Christmas break, the cardboard house project was done, but something was missing. “It took us a month to make this and we wanted it to look as neat as possible,” Luke said, “We decided to send out a letter in chief chatter to ask for magazine clippings to decorate it with.” Students were asked to bring any artwork to room 110 by January 29th. The donations were not very generous, and the students plan to use other artwork from Fielding’s classes.
The cardboard house stands around seven feet tall and consists of two houses fitted into one. Luke gave me a tour inside in order to point out the slanted door and windows. They plan to lace a lamp near the back in order to give it a little more of a homey touch. Further decorating will occur next Monday, February 8th and both students are considering entering the house in the upcoming art show in March. All in all, the two seniors put a lot of effort into creating this work of art and they deserve all of our support!
